Hirudotherapy for Doctors
Today Russian doctors have accumulated unique experience of medicinal usage of the leech. Hirudotherapy is an officially recognized method and is subject to mandatory state certification.
The Kamenev family has accrued knowledge in the field of medicinal leech utilization for three generations. Yuri and Oleg Kamenev – father and son – have written two books on this subject.
In 2007 a first official textbook on hirudotherapy was published in Russia. It was approved by the Ministry of Health, and includes not only information on the biology of the leech and the methods for their medicinal usage, but also material on organizing hirudotherapy cabinets. For over 10 years the clinic had served as the foundation for training doctors in hirudotherapy.
A distinct focus for the Kamenev family is the rejuvenating, revitalizing effect of the medicinal leech. Unique methods of treatments, special skills and methods of application allow to avoid many complications and unpleasant reactions.
It is necessary to remember that only bred leeches are safe. Even though the wild ones can be the source of infection for humans, as the interest in medicinal leeches is growing in Europe, wild leeches might be exported unconscientiously under the guise of bred ones from Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan.
